Mental refers to state or relating to the mind or an intellectual process. Mental disorder refers to the state of being mentally ill or unstable. Mental health is the emotional, social, environmental and psychological stability of an individual. Mental health is also seen as a state of complete and total soundness of the psychology, emotional, social, and financial stability of an individual.
If someone is not psychological stable it is referred to as mental breakdown, if someone is not emotionally stable, that’s mental breakdown, if someone is not financially stable that’s mental breakdown and if someone is not socially stable, that’s also mental breakdown
The mental aspect of an individual matters more than the physiological aspect of the body, IE to say that the spiritual controls the physical. The mental is not seen, the psychological is not seen, the social is not seen, the financial is not seen but when affected it shows on the physiological aspect of the body.
There are more of mentally derailed people that are well dressed than those that are physically seen in rag clothes or dirty clothes because, the man that is well suited might be having issues with anger, the market woman might be having issues with finance, the well-dressed lady might be experiencing heartbreak or worse than the physically derailed individual (mad man).
Let me talk more on the mad man that is mentally unstable and the man well suited walking on the street. The man that is mentally derailed is known, Seen and recognized already as a craze man or mad man, but the man at the office who is known as a sane man will one day boost into anger and act exactly the same way the mentally derailed man acts, i.e. if he cannot manage the anger.
There are 5 stages of mental disorders:
This is the first stage where an individual fails to place a balance between demand and necessity of life.
Stress can be seen as a state where the body becomes unable to meet up with required demand. The inability for an individual to plan out the activities for that day, work demand, family demand, career demand, and failure in achieving a particular goal in a day, disappointment, job hunting, family planning demand (birth control), financial crisis etc., can lead to stress.
The nursing mum that comes back from work after the day to day activities, finds it difficult to breast feed the child due to stress. The man who is supposed to pay his utility bill but cannot meet up because he is currently unemployed, can lead to stress. A woman that spends all her time at the office and has no time for her own personal career can be stressed. A woman that comes home, already exhausted as a result of work demand and is so tired to cook, is also as a result of stress
Stress can be managed. To manage stress, one should create a balance plan as to what has to be done at a particular point in time. Learn to relax, make resting a habit, because resting is a fast healing process.
Then after this stage if the individual lacks the necessary knowledge to handle this state it leads to;
The inability of an individual to control his or her emotions due to unexpected pressure can lead to anger. Anger is a strong feeling of displeasure, hostility or antagonism towards someone or something, usually combined with an urge to harm. As a result in failure for an individual to manage stress it leads to anger, the point of picking offences at every slit opportunity.
Anger is provoked by pressure, Failure, disappointment in self, relationship, family etc., harsh upbringing, negative experiences in life are major determinant of anger. Another vital cause of anger is Gene. Anger can be transferred from one generation to the other.
Every individual is born with adrenaline, which is produced in the brain and released when triggered by anger. Naturally some people are born with excess adrenaline (hormone for action) so for every minor action, they are always at alert to act. Though there is an injection to reduce excess adrenaline, but we do not have major cases of excess adrenaline in Nigeria.
In managing anger, there should be a continuous self-discipline, the individual walking away when he/she feels that he is beginning to lose it. This goes a long way to help the individual manage it.
3) Anxiety (pathology)
A state of restlessness and agitation, often accompanied by a distressing sense of oppression or tightness in the stomach. The individual always feel being oppressed by people for no reason. This is a feeling that occurs as a result of unknown pressure and fear of failure. A guy that is going for a job interview and feels that he might not be picked because of his qualifications, can be filled with fear and gradually he becomes anxious.
Anxiety is triggered by restless, Fear of oppression, inferiority complex, low financial ability, pressure, and being unnecessarily worried for no reason.
In managing Anxiety, focus and engage your mind on what you love doing, be it writing, seeing movies, swimming, gaming, etc. Always be happy for no reason. You should let go of inferiority complex by all means and also the effect of anxiety could give a long term mental break down, so such individual should enroll for a therapy section for better and stable recovery.
This stage is triggered by ambitiousness of someone who already has set plans and goals for what he/she wants to achieve in life and if it’s not forth coming the way it has been planned, the person gradually cling to taking any opportunity that seems like the way. The person’s mindset in this state is tuned towards negative thinking. Which arouse a relaxed mindset of losing their lives.
When they slip into this acceptance stage, they lose interest in striving for the best. Everything comes to standstill and goes by this statement…”whatever comes, I will accept”.
This is accepting, receiving of something offered, with approbation, satisfaction, or acquiescence; especially, favorable and unfavorable approval. At this stage the individual completely accept what so ever that comes, his or her way either good or evil
This stage affects women more, married, single, or women seeking for job. For instance a married woman that is willing to keep her husband, whichever way it is, will take up anything that the man says without uttering her sincere opinion thereby dying in silence. People that falls in this state, see no reason with having their own opinion or say in whatever that matters. For the single lady that feels that she is due for marriage, tends to walk into any man’s life just to be called “Mrs.” This state is crucial, and if the person is not vigorously followed, he/she will end up compounding more problems upon him/herself and if not well managed, the person gradually slips into depression.
Total acceptance of whatever comes the person’s way, which is mostly focused on the negative side of what the universe sent to the person, he/she is not selective, because he/she is stressed, angry, and anxious, lacks motivation and hope to move on.
It takes strong therapy section to revert the person’s positive mindset. Most times people at this stage may not survive the aftermath of this period but if eventually survives might take a longer period to be mentally sound again.
Management /Remedy: friends and family are the major remedy to such individual, negative words should be controlled around where such individual resides to help maintain a stable health. Finally such individuals should always be taken to place of fun and celebration regularly, including fun-filled places of activities.
It’s a state of mind where an individual becomes sad, unable to move on with life and feels that quitting is the best option. Depression brings serious long-term lowering of enjoyment of life or inability to visualize a happy future. This is where life becomes meaningless, less valued, and worthless. Life becomes any negative word that you can think of.
At this stage, means of putting an end to life becomes very easy, the depressed person start getting Inspiration on the part of the body that is easier to chop off from, IE to say, method and ways to commit suicide becomes very easy for such individual. Also the depressed person feels that the best way to be free from the mystery is to commit suicide.
But someone does not fall suddenly into this stage, it is a process that climbs from stress, anger, anxiety, acceptance down to depression. It can only lead to depression, if not well managed. If the individual is noticed in time by an intelligent psychiatrist, individual or therapist, the individual can be taken back to his or her normal life to avoid suicide.
To manage depression, the individual should be exposed to new friends, new things about life, expose the person to the wonders of life. Finally family and friends should never let such individual to be all by him/herself.
